The New York Jets were flying high coming into the 2023 season. They had a great defense returning from last year, and of course, added future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers.
All of those hopes came crashing down 4 snaps into the season. Aaron Rodgers tore his left Achilles 4 minutes into the game, on the very first drive for the Jets. Somehow, Zach Wilson came into the game and managed to do juuust enough to lead the Jets to a win in overtime. However, it’s a devastating blow to the franchise, who hasn’t had this much hype and hope in a long, long time. So, what’s next for the Jets? Head Coach Robert Saleh indicated Zach Wilson would be the starter for the rest of the year. It’s also being reported that the Jets are already reaching out to veteran QBs on the free agent market. There are some decent options out there, but at least for the time being, it’s Wilson’s team. He only threw for 140 yards last night, and the team will need him to be better with the teams the Jets are playing in the next few weeks.
The team spoke highly about what Rodgers has meant to the team off the field as well, with Zach raving about everything he has learned from Rodgers in the last few months. Time will tell if that tutelage translates to on the field success. However, it’s still a somber day for the franchise. We already saw how the team rebounded last night. Now, they have a whole week to give Zach Wilson first team reps and to build a gameplan for success against an excellent Cowboys defense.
The life of a sports fan and sports team can go from the highest of highs and lowest of lows on any single play.
