Mary McGee, who passed away in November 2024 at the age of 87, was a pioneering figure in motorsports and a trailblazer for women in racing. Her journey into the male-dominated world of racing began in the 1950s with sports cars. Driving a Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, she competed in events organized by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), where she quickly built a reputation as a skilled and determined racer.

The Early Years:

Her transition to motorcycle racing in 1960 marked a significant turning point in her career. Encouraged by actor and racer Steve McQueen, McGee took to two wheels and became the first woman to compete in motorcycle road racing sanctioned by the American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM). She not only mastered the technical and physical demands of motorcycle racing but also broke barriers, paving the way for other women to enter the sport.

In the 1960s and 1970s, McGee’s presence in off-road racing solidified her legacy. She competed in the grueling Baja 1000 and Baja 500 races, becoming the first woman to finish the Baja 1000 in 1967 and the only woman to ride the Baja 500 solo in 1975. These feats required extraordinary endurance and mental toughness, as the events were fraught with extreme conditions and high risks.

McGee’s career wasn’t limited to just racing. She also advocated for women in motorsports, using her platform to inspire young female racers. Her induction into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2018 recognized her contributions to breaking down barriers in racing and promoting inclusivity in the sport.

Life After Racing:

Beyond her accolades, McGee remained active in the racing community well into her later years. She participated in vintage motorcycle events and supported educational programs to mentor aspiring racers, emphasizing resilience and passion as keys to success.

Mary McGee’s life and career exemplify courage, perseverance, and a commitment to challenging societal norms. Her story continues to inspire racers of all backgrounds to pursue their dreams against the odds.
