Congratulations to Coco Gauff, the 19-year-old American who won her first Grand Slam at the US Open. Gauff is the youngest American to win a Grand Slam since Serena Williams in 1999.
Gauff had her work cut our for her as she lost the first set against new World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Gauff had to come back in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
She’s the 11th teenager to win a Grand Slam singles title, and she also overtook the No. 1 doubles ranking with partner Jessica Pegula.
“Those who thought they were adding water to my fire, they were really putting gas on it and I am burning so bright right now,” she said afterward.
